The Photo Study Collection

The Photo Study Collection specializes in assembling of photographical documentation of art and architecture in relation with scientific orientation of the Institute.

The core of the Photo Study Collection of SIAH is the collection of negatives executed during an existence of the Institute by its photographers (Frantisek Hideg, Stanislav Mally, Thea Leixnerova, Miroslav Duda). Another part contains an ensemble of negatives, which were produced by fellows of SIAH in the period from 1955 (Juraj Zary, Ivan Rusina, Petr Fidler, Katarina Biathova, Eva Toranova, Iva Mojzisova, Fedor Kresak, Viera Luxova and Anna Petrova-Pleskotova among others).

The files document the collection of ancient art as well as modern art of what is now Slovakia. According to the list of items made at 3rd December 2004 the collection consists of 33 760 items (negatives and photos). Especially, the high quality monochrome photos of Slovak origin adjusted on documentation cards are regarded to be very useful for Slovak art-historical community. They include architecture, paintings, sculptures, graphics and art craft. The area of gothic architecture and paintings is very well covered. Especially, the photos of works of art of Slovak origin, presently deposed in Esztergom (Kereszteny muzeum) are of great importance to the Slovak art-historians. A considerable part of the collection are the diapositives, which serve mainly for presentations.

A separate part of our collection of photos consists of photos of historical monuments of Slovakia and neighboring countries. SIAH has acquired these by means of exchange with the documentation center of Austrian Academy of Sciences in Krems (Institut fur Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit).

There is also a unique collection of monochrome photos of Slovak cities from the period between two world wars. These are important because these photos allow us to understand in detail the architectural and urban development of Slovak cities in inter-war era (approximately 5 000 items). This material is crucial mainly for historians of architecture as well as for experts specialized on the problem of urbanization in our history.

Historical postcards from the twentieth century constitute a separate category as they show us the appearance of Slovak cities and historical monuments throughout the last century.

To make finding of particular information in the collection easier, there do name, subject and location sort catalogues. Approximately 12 500 items are included in the electronical catalogue.

The orders for the execution of the photos from the negatives of the photo collection of SIAH are managed on the basis of written request according to internal regulation of SIAH.
